Thai Blues

It's only been a few hours since I've been back home and I wish I was back in Thailand again. I'll up the photobucket album link once I'm done uploading all of the pictures All pictures are upped (minus the crazy camwhorish ones I took late last night in a fit of mania, pretending to be drunk on mineral water. I know...damn random so stuff it.)

Let's see...when we arrived in Chieng Mai, we were greeted by this Thai lady who gave us a Jasmine (Jasminum sambac) garland and got photographed - certainly made me feel misplaced; I mean, come on I'm just some lowly student and you're treating me like some celeb or something. Of course, my ego got a shot of reality when I later learnt it was a ruse for the locals to obtain money. They'll take your photo, frame it up and ask you if you're interested in buying it. (Although now, I kinda regret not buying the other one but meh. The frame wasn't pretty.)

Anywhos, had lunch at this roadside stall where Taksin ate before. I was at the same table and everything - kinda cool except it would have been better if it was some better well-known personality like...oh, I don't know, Shiwon or Kibum or Hae or Ryeo etc. But I won't complain.

Headed off to the Hotel, dropped our stuff before we headed off to this amazing private-turned-public park. Had a blast cycling through the gardens and past a paddy field - it brought to mind some totally cliched scenes from the countless Asian dramas I've watched. Which was completely awesome in any case.

Had dinner at this place where there was a cultural show. The buffet of appetisers was...unique to say the least. They gave us this boat made of banana leaf and we scooped up green curry to sip. And Pad Thai. I had an instant liking for this coconut milk dessert mini pancake (so much so I had it for breakfast as well.)

The cultural performance was interesting, if a tad draggy. I'm not saying that I didn't enjoy the performance - I did. But sitting on the floor for a freaking long time numbs the legs. I couldn't enjoy the performance as much as I wanted to since half the time I was moving my butt and wiggling my toes, making sure they hadn't died on me from lack of blood flow. Towards the end, I didn't dance when asked but I DID take pictures of those who did.

The following day, we headed off to the Queen's Botanical Gardens. God, it puts SBG & Hortpark to shame in some aspects, particularly with the museum exhibits. Pity we were pressed for time and didn't manage to peek into the Herbarium to see the preserved & dried botanical specimens. It was also damn awesome to see the rare WHITE Torch Ginger (Etlingera elatior). Normally, they come in red - I've never seen a white one before and it was beautiful. The cactus exhibit was gorgeous I tell you.

We had to miss going to the Winter Palace because of its opening hours. From what some people have told me, it's stunning so it's a real shame. But we DID visit this Buddhist Temple with a completely breathtaking paronamic view of the city. The cable car was...weird as it moved sideways and was completely closed off to the outside - unlike Singapore's cable car which allows one to view Sentosa & Mt Faber and moved forwards instead. I've also grown less afraid of dogs - note the word LESS.

I still freak out and panic when I see dogs. Blame this aggressive Chihuahua mutt who terrorized the neighbourhood when I was a wee little tyke. Thank god, it was put down when its owner died (the only person the dog listened to).

The final day of activity was the best damn day ever as we headed up the mountains to reach the summit where it was cool and something akin to utopia on earth. The place made me think of this one line that's been playing in my head: the misty forests of Avalon.

It's so damn random but god, the scenery was stunningly breathtaking beautiful. (I guess you can figure out that it's indescribable.) We had lunch at a nearby waterfall and later visited the Chiang Mai University. God, I never knew just how lucky I was to be able to enjoy the facilities in school. The tissue culture labs lacked an autoclave room or at least, I didn't see it. Pity we didn't get to mingle much with the students - it would have been great - better still if we were allowed to sit in during a lecture or something. Oh well.

In the evening, we went to the Night market where I'd admit I got cranky, irritable and downright rude so I apologise if I offended anyone but seriously lah. The sellers were rather aggressive, my feet were hurting and I'd best just stop listing any other superficial reasons why I was irritable other than I was tired.

But the shoulder, back, neck, head massage was completely worthwhile. Bloody great massage it was, particularly with the price. A mere 80 BHT for half an hour! I wished I had the time to do my legs. Oh well...

Tried to obtain some trinkets for the class but failed spectacularly since most of the shops were starting to close. I was bloody pissed off at this pervert who were taking pictures of the girls and going like "good shot, grade A, grade A!"

Bastard. If I weren't in the right state of mind, I'd have punched him in the balls and thrown his camera away. Fucking shithead. Some of the girls were freaking oblivious and were walking so damn slowly, it made me boil and yes, I was frantically going 'faster, faster'. Granted, no one was wearing anything skimpy and you can call me a freaking conservative asshole but I just disliked it. Particularly when it was close to 1am when this happened.

Want to know what's the bestest part?

I went to Thailand and all I spent was on two tees, magnets and gum - all in all less than 2000BHT. For a shoppaholic, it's ridiculous. I'm going to splurge back home hopefully (if I'm in the mood). Retail theraphy was barely enough in Thailand.

So that about sums up the trip.

Completely spectacularly awesome.
